Ingredients

There’s no classic recipe for barbecue sauce, but most have a tomato and vinegar base, onions, sweetener like brown sugar or molasses, and spices like mustard and peppers. This recipe adds sweetness with fresh or frozen peaches plus the classic vanilla, caramel, or oaky flavors of Bourbon.

Any mid-range bourbon works well – I tend to cook and bake with Maker’s Mark. Just like when cooking with wine, choose something you enjoy drinking.

Whatever you do, don’t skip the Worcestershire sauce! We ran out and I left it out of one batch, and the BBQ sauce tasted flat. You can always use it in other BBQ recipes like my apple pie baked beans.

While this peach bourbon BBQ sauce is my and my kiddo’s favorite, my husband always says that he would eat this other homemade BBQ sauce over anything, including shoe leather!

Recipe tips and tricks

There’s nothing tricky about making peach barbecue sauce. You’ll lightly cook the onions, garlic, and peaches until soft and then add the rest of the ingredients and cook until the flavors mix.

I prefer to puree this BBQ sauce until smooth, but you can leave it chunky if you like. If you do this, you should chop the peach slices into smaller bits.

To peel fresh peaches, use a paring knife to make a large, shallow X in the skin of the bottom of the peach (the side opposite the stem). Bring a pot of water to boil and drop them in the water for 30 to 60 seconds. Lift the peaches out of the pot with a slotted spoon, and place them in a bowl of ice water. Once cool, you should be able to peel the skin off easily.

Notes

This peach BBQ sauce recipe will make about two and a half cups of barbecue sauce.
To peel fresh peaches, use the tip of a paring knife to make a large, shallow X in the skin of the bottom of the peach. Drop them in boiling water for 30 to 60 seconds, lift them out with a slotted spoon, and place them into a bowl of ice water. The skin should peel off easily. Slice in half, then pit, and slice into eighths.
For a bourbon whiskey, I often cook and bake with Maker’s Mark.
